A Nature-Inspired Bathroom Makeover

When we first moved into our home back in 2005, everything inside was white: walls, woodwork, ceilings, medicine cabinet–all white. So, it didn’t take long for me to want to bring some Witchy-ness and color inside. I decided to start small so as not to give the husband a coronary. Here are a few before photos of the Nature-inspired bathroom makeover of the half bath on the main level of our home:

As you can see, it was pretty lifeless and drab, but I had a vision. I wanted color–lots of it. And I wanted to be surrounded by nature. I love, love, love birds and trees, but the space was far too small to paint a tree mural, so I decided to improvise with a tree branch border.

I started by sketching simple undulating lines on the wall about 18 inches down from the ceiling to delineate where the branches would be, then I painted everything beneath that line in teal. Leaving the space above the line white eliminated me having to cut in with paint near the ceiling, so that saved a ton of time and aggravation. Next I went in and added the actual border using simple swipes of brown paint and then added leaves, which are also just layers of swipes of the paint brush using shades of spring green. Nothing fancy. No special techniques. Once that was dry, I added a highlight of beige (created by mixing white to my brown paint) on the tops of the branches to give them some depth and I added a second color on the leaves (created by mixing white to my spring green paint). I liked it a lot. But…

I thought, why stop there? Why not add one more whimsical touch to complete the room? That white medicine cabinet was begging for an upgrade of its own!

Of course I had to add my beloved birds and bees.

This was such an easy makeover and it really transformed the room into something more my whimsical witchy-style. Because it’s so simple to do, I’ve since used this same theme but added birds in a client’s house. Here we left the deep burgundy that was already in the room for the bottom part and I painted a sky color above. This small change really added a nice brightening effect to the whole space.

If you ‘d like to try this style in your home, you can really use almost any color combination (as long as there is good contrast between top and bottom) and it works well. Try it! Then comment below with your photos! I’d love to see them.
